Student Software Choices in 2010

by SoftwareGuru

The majority of student and home users have become accustomed to using Google for most of their internet searches.

So when Google started advertising a new web browser on its homepage, even older parents and novice web users started asking, "what's Chrome?"

Perhaps this combined with Gmail and Google Docs is a watershed moment for Microsoft.

You can't ignore the competition and hope that no-one else hears about it in an era of cheap broadband, on-demand information and social media opening up our daily lives to our family, friends and beyond.

No one would trust the boxer who enters the pre-match press conference and doesn't look his opponent in the eye, declaring he can't see anyone else.

If he continues that attitude in the ring he's going to get knocked out. Same goes for companies.

Students, parents and bargain hunters are aware of what choices they have as potential customers. They watch from the side of the ring to see who's best.

Float Like A Butterfly, Sting Like A Bee

It is common in advertising and marketing to claim that the latest edition of your product is the best yet.

The sceptic in us, for example, wonders how "whiter than white" washing powder could clean clothes that much whiter than last year's washing powder.

However, Microsoft's open admission of how strong rival competition is in crucial areas of their business highlights how seriously they are committed to winning over, or indeed winning back customers.

Last year Microsoft launched their new Bing search engine which gained much critical acclaim. See bing.com

By the end of this year Microsoft will have launched 3 of its strongest ever products:

- Internet Explorer 9
- Microsoft Office 2010
- Windows Phone 7 Series

Office 2010 will add social networking capability which is already available to Office 2007 users through free Outlook 2007 downloads.

Parents and students know that MS Office has benefitted from years of evolution but it has one core disadvantage.

Instant access
has not always been possible via Microsoft's partners and vendors who usually have to send physical media like DVDs out to customers.

Inferior products usually price themselves below their competitors but Google Docs went further and through online document management, instant access gave it a competitive edge.

Microsoft had to look Google Doc's online benefit straight in the eye and deliver a response.

Our Returning Champion

Existing Microsoft customers can enjoy free downloads for Office 2007 including Office Live and Social Connector.

Future customers will have online document management and social media integrated by default into Microsoft Office 2010.

Gary Marshall's recent TechRadar article suggests that Microsoft always exceeds expectations when it's the underdog, although whether IE is the Bono of browsers is another debate all together.

All of which leaves us with the question of instant access and delivery options.

Microsoft know that more customers will buy their products if they can buy them online and download them for use the same day.

Xbox Live already delivers premium games and online content instantly for customers on a platform which limits digital piracy issues.

Once digital piracy considerations have been addressed, the future of student software will be shaped by key issues of instant access, software downloads and of course, value for money.

At Software4Students we will continue to look for new ways to meet customer needs and ensure you always get more for less.
