David Cameron to Safeguard Education Standards?

The next political battleground could be education. Will your children benefit?

As Summer 2008 ended, Gordon Brown announced Labour's plans to boost education in the UK by providing laptops and cheap broadband to children from low income families.

Indeed much of Labour's education plans have moved largely off the radar ever since the economic storm arrived.

But with Tory leader David Cameron looking to press home political advantage as families become more strapped for cash, could the next battleground be education?

And would a change of Government serve the best interests of an education system already accused of "dumbed down" learning for teenagers?

Will David Cameron be the next PM?

Education Standards

This week the BBC reported on research by Professor Michael Shayer of King's College London.

He looked at how 800 secondary pupils performed in problem-solving tests.

The results suggest that when it comes to a higher level of understanding, researchers found that today's pupils were much less successful than in the 1970s.

The professor remarked that current practises are about reacting quickly at a shallow level.

The culture of text messages and computer games is about speed and instant hits, rather than more profound or detailed ways of handling information.

Quality of Teachers

Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats have claimed that increasing numbers of trainee teachers are having to re-sit basic maths tests.

The Liberal Democrat schools spokesman, David Laws, said: "The government will only be able to really drive-up standards in our schools if it can attract the best and the brightest to the teaching profession."

Whatever the government's plans will be, schools across the UK must be properly funded and staffed with talented teachers on hand to help guide the next generation.

With so much quality software now available, pupils can learn skills and evolve ideas that will benefit them throughout their career.

Whether David Cameron is the right man to lead the UK's education system after over a decade of Labour management remains to be seen.
