Demand for places raises issue of social mobility
Are students from poorer backgrounds getting a fair deal?

The issue of
social mobility is one that is sure to continue to foster
debate in relation to higher education.
There is no doubt that students are getting into more debt now
than they were 15 years ago. Even with the advantage of online
shopping and price comparison tools and websites, the fact
remains that the cost of higher education will continue to make
it unattractive to some students.
The education industry and those such as property letting that
feed off of it will always contain a percentage of people who
only care about making money.
The damage this causes to the overall UK economy is not
discovered until years later.
It will become even more difficult to tackle rising unemployment
in an era today where companies can find the best talent, at the
price they can afford, from anywhere around the world.
Failure to properly educate students from all backgrounds will
pose a much greater threat to the well-being of the UK in this
knowledge economy era than it would have done in the past.

Time For The Rocky Theme Tune?
Rising up to the challenge is what's
required and students must take responsibility for their own
future. Boxing clever is the key.
Local libraries are still a deep ocean of resources whether it's
how-to books for learning new skills or checking emails and
printing off documents.
For many entrepreneurs, third level education may not suit them
and many successful business men and women have achieved greatly
without pursuing it.
There really is no substitute for hard work, determination and
self-discipline.
The world today is changing so fast that students cannot reply
on the experience of their parents or guardians alone to help
guide them through these developments.
Society before the advent of electricity and personal transport
was a radically different entity. Fast forward to today and the
combination of super fast broadband, cloud computing and an
online world closer to a hive state, is changing the way we do
everything.

Role of New Universities.
The social mobility debate has also received attention from the
likes of the
BBC and
Barnardos.
Today's report Social Mobility: Universities Changing Lives
is the work of the Million+ Think Tank group, chaired by Les
Ebdon.
Professor Ebdon says that the debate about widening access
should no longer be about "a few thousand high achievers from
working class backgrounds accessing a small number of
traditional universities".
The report indicates that new universities are responsible for
"social mobility on a significant scale".
Here at Software4Students, we welcome the report and are
delighted to hear that new universities are having such a
positive impact on social mobility.
Creating new opportunities for students is firmly part of our
own ethos, whether it's
Microsoft Office live which is available for free or our
forthcoming
Adobe Student Software range at heavily discounted prices.
Saving money is a good habit to get into!
