Three gigabytes of the latest information, four new icons on my desktop and one killer software app - if you haven't heard of Encarta software before it's time to catch up with the learning and homework assistant that is Encarta 2009.

Let's leave aside Microsoft's operating system position for a minute and just for once let's give some credit where credit is due.

Today we will examine what the likes of Encarta 2009 can contribute to a world in need of new ideas, innovation and cutting edge thinking which comes from young people having affordable access to learning and education. Even Gordon Brown agrees on that one!


As a student at school it wasn't that long ago that researching a homework or coursework topic meant sifting through large, heavy encyclopedias and archived library newspapers and magazines. Now those days are gone.

On just one DVD Microsoft have crammed in a powerful homework package with stunning attention to detail. It includes a full set of easy-to-use resources to help students successfully complete assignments in a variety of subjects.

In fact, this reviewer's first impression upon starting the Microsoft Student component of the package was one of envy and admiration. The media may claim that the likes of GCSE and A-level exams are getting easier but on the basis of this software offering it's much more likely that students simply have easier access to top quality information.

I can't imagine any homework topic proving insurmountable with Encarta 2009 at your disposal.

Even the dreaded public speaking experience is made manageable with Student PowerPoint presentation guides. Charts, graphs, reports - they're all covered.

Clear, concise menus and sensible navigation options highlight the importance that Microsoft have given to the ease-of-use of this educational package.

You don't need to be a whizz kid (now there's a phrase that I thought had disappeared along with heavy encyclopedias!) to find whatever it is you're looking for, anyone should be able to enjoy the learning experience.

Encarta 2009 won't tidy their bedroom, keep their music at a sensible level or stop them from dying their hair bright green.

However, if you're a parent or guardian looking to give someone in your family the help them need to improve their grades and tackle homework then Encarta 2009 software is available now at an affordable price.
