Good news for students looking for internships!
| The government launched a new Common Best Practice Code for High-Quality Internships in conjunction with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) last week. The launch of the government’s ‘Common Best Practice Code for High-Quality Internships’ is great news for students who will be able to get a greater understanding of what to expect from an internship. Internships often get a lot of bad press for ‘taking advantage of students to get cheap labour’ but the most informed are aware of the benefits that a well structured internship can provide. For graduates in particular the need for work experience is vital; after spending 3 or more years out of work to attain their degree, graduates are aware that their academic qualifications are no longer enough in a saturated graduate job market. The code is a guideline for organisations seeking to “ensure fair, open and high-quality internships as a means of improving social mobility and enabling organisations to access wider talent pools”. CIPD chief executive Jackie Orme, says: “Internships are a valuable resource for those looking to improve their employability before taking their first step on the career ladder, but they must be fully accessible and operated to a high standard if they are to be of maximum benefit. We recognised this in our own internships guide and are pleased to see the message so comprehensively reinforced in this code, which the government have built around our earlier guidance. We hope that it will be effective at encouraging employers to provide the kind of placements that are rewarding to both young people and organisations.
It is very encouraging that such a move has been taken and recognised as a way of developing young talents who have not yet entered a field of serious work. By such pre-exposure through internships, their confidence is built and an assurance of excellence. Check out some of the useful websites we have collected for internship placements:
