Connect Xbox 360 To PC and Enjoy Windows Media Center.

Microsoft's announcement that the Xbox360 price has been reduced to only £129.99 is certain to make it popular in UK homes this Christmas.

This week sees the hotly anticipated release of the 'New Xbox Experience' (NXE) dashboard revamp.

Among other things, it will allow you to create Nintendo-Mii style characters that are supposed to reflect your online persona.

In theory, while Microsoft may have missed out on the social networking phenomena first time around (MSN spaces anyone?), this has the potential to surpass the likes of Facebook and put them at the forefront of Social Networking 2.0.

One of the really clever things about the Xbox360 is it's ability to connect to other computers or laptops on your home wireless network via Windows Media Center.

In doing so, you can access your PC's music, photos, films or TV shows and view them from the comfort of another room.

Connecting your PC or laptop to your Xbox360 is reasonably straightforward and that's what we'll look at now in more detail.

Connecting To Windows Media Center.

The Xbox 360 is technically a Media Center Extender - a hardware device that, when connected to a TV, includes the ability to let you enjoy the Windows Media Center experience (even though your PC or laptop is in another room).

In order to use the Xbox 360 as a Windows Media Center Extender you will need:

* Home Network
* PC or Laptop running Windows Media Center
* Xbox 360

The home network can be wireless or wired, or a combination of both. Microsoft recommends that if you are using a wireless network, you use a dual band router so you can set this network segment in 802.11a.

Go to www.xbox.com/pcsetup where you’ll find the necessary software. This site will automatically detect your operating system and provide the link for the corresponding software.

Once that's completed, turn on your Xbox 360 and go to the Media blade, where you’ll find a Media Center button at the bottom.

The Xbox 360 will provide you with a Media Center Setup Key, an 8-digit number that is required by the Windows Media Center PC to access the Xbox 360.

Write down the setup key, hit the Continue button, and leave the Xbox 360 on the current screen, where it will wait for the rest of the setup process.

Now, it is time to switch back to your Windows Media Center computer. Run the software downloaded from Xbox.com. Enter the set-up key when prompted.

You will also need to open a few Firewall ports. Instructions for this can be found here.

It may sound a bit complicated but really, it isn't. Vista users will find their PC sees the Xbox360 immediately so the set-up key is all that is needed.

Tweaking your firewall to allow your Xbox access to your PC will take less time then checking your inbox.

Once done, you're ready to enjoy all your multimedia content. Happy Gaming!
