Internet Explorer 9 Full Version Hits The Web At Speed

by SoftwareGuru

Have you visited Google recently? Well of course you have.

But have you visited it in anything other than their own Google Chrome browser?

If so, you'll have noticed the small advert in the top right of the homepage selling you “A faster way to browse the web”.

A large percentage of home computer and office users have stuck with the out of the box Internet Explorer as their default browser, but the more savvy web users have assessed the alternatives.

Last week, Microsoft launched Internet Explorer 9, the latest version of its browser, which it hopes will wrestle back the dominance of the web browser market.

More Choice

Microsoft's Brian Kealy marked the IE9 launch with the fantastic soundbite “that more than a quarter of web users spend more time choosing which toilet paper brand to buy than the internet browser they use.”

Having used a variety of browsers myself, it can be interesting to try them all out.

Google Chrome currently has the fastest adoption rate and IE9 will do well to match it.

It's also lightning quick which is its main selling point. Mozilla Firefox has long been the favourite of the IT professional as well as a large percentage of home users.

With the enormous amount of third party add-ons and plugins, it's fully customisable for every user's needs.

However, Microsoft are on a roll after the success of Windows 7 and Office 2010 so if they've put the same effort into IE9 it could yet prove to be a winner.

Chrome often had problems with streaming video (for example you couldn't watch Eircom's SportsHub with it), while Firefox 3 became a huge memory-drain on your computer, and with too many plugins installed could become very sluggish.
As Fast As Chrome

Internet Explorer 9 has had test or sample versions out for a while now (IE9 beta and RC), and at first glance, these did not make up for the shortfalls of IE7 and IE8.

However, all these bugs and hiccups seem to have been ironed out in the final release.

It has gone back to the basics, back to what worked in earlier iterations, while keeping the bells and whistles you'd expect from any new release, and is dare I say it, just as quick as Chrome.

I've also been using the Release Candidate version of Firefox 4, whose full version is due March 22nd, and found it also regains ground speed-wise.

With Internet Explorer 9 marking a return to form for the browser, it should sit easily alongside Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari as an ideal default browser, but with many tech aficionados still likely to scornfully declare “oh you're still using Internet Explorer” over your shoulder, it might be difficult for Microsoft to regain its foothold in the browser wars.

That said, the competitive nature of it all makes it better for the user, especially ones who demand instant access to everything.

Rather than take any Internet Explorer 9 reviews at face value, why not give it a try and make your own mind up?
