Learn faster by watching videos

by SoftwareGuru

YouTube is one of the most useful websites on the internet.

Rather than just a place for watching funny videos of cats or listening to music, there are plenty of instructional videos uploaded by users for everything from changing a car tyre to cooking lobster.

However, YouTube is extremely useful for software users, and there are step-by-step walkthrough videos for almost everything online.

These videos have been made by normal people, regular computer users like yourself, and therefore are easy to follow, and tremendously informative.

As well as user-made videos, may software companies have also uploaded their own informative guides to using their programs.

This week the S4S YouTube channel is showing a video on Dragon Naturally Speaking software and how it can help school children have the confidence to improve their reading and writing skills.

Another such example of how this has been done extremely well by the software company themselves is Adobe Photoshop's series of excellent walkthroughs about the many features of their Adobe Photoshop CS5 software.

Last week's software article explained how much value for money the Photoshop Student and Teacher package has to offer.

Seeing Is Believing

Seeing programs in use, and following the events take place on screen is far more useful than reading instructions in a print manual or on a page or webpage.

The user-uploaded videos for Dragon Naturally Speaking are a great example of how these are done well.

Another major benefit of teaching yourself through online video is the fact you can pause the tutorial at any time, and return later.

There are also ordered series of videos, where you can start at the beginning with the very basics and move up gradually at a rate that reflects your own progress.

A class or offline course on the use of software may make a large dent in your wallet, whereas videos like these are freely available, and can be watched whenever you like and as often as needs be.

Some programs can initially be daunting to use at first due to the vast number of different features, but taken one at a time, many software users can become extremely efficient through watching the instructional videos online.

Be Inspired

Have you heard of Ted.com?

TED (Technology Entertainment and Design) is a global set of conferences curated by the American private non-profit Sapling Foundation, formed to share "ideas worth spreading."

While YouTube has an 'almost anything goes' approach to content, TED focuses on ideas.

In fact, some of the most fascinating video clips I've watched this year were courtesy of this organisation.

Since June 2006, the talks have been offered for free viewing online, under a Creative Commons license, through TED.com.

Wikipedia provides statistics to illustrate how popular these videos have become.

"As of July 2010, over 700 talks are available free online.

By January 2009 they had been viewed 50 million times.

In July 2010, the viewing figure stood at more than 290 million, reflecting a still growing global audience."

From voice recognition software to videos from around the world showing off the latest ideas, learning in the 21st century has never been so exciting!
