Microsoft Office 2010: How To Customise Office Ribbon Tabs
Ribbon Issue Becomes New Selling Point
by
SoftwareGuru
If the outcry from Microsoft customers about the Office 2007
ribbon was anything to go by, the innovative feature annoyed a
lot of users.
Essentially what the designers did was take the idea of tabbed
browsing which we all enjoy and allocate a set of tools to
each tab, layered on a productivity ribbon.
"Everything can be accessed so much faster now", said Microsoft.
"Where did the File button go?", everyone else yelled
back.
This was continued by a series of "where is?" questions
until the user either learned the answers from daily use
or uninstalled 2007 and went back to Office 2003.
You can draw similar comparisons with users who tried Vista but
went back to Windows XP. It was only when Windows 7 came along
that the doubters were won over.
If you are one of those people who disliked the Office 2007
ribbon, we've got some good news for you...

Office 2010 Ribbon has new custom
options
Learning to drive is an experience that most people can relate
to and eventually you don't have to think about where things are
in the vehicle, you just drive.
The customisation options for Office 2010's ribbon will soon
have you using your new software without having to think about
where anything is located.
Need a walk-through guide to help you?
Microsoft Office expert and
MVP
(Most Valuable Professional) Echo Swinford has
published several guides over at
http://office.microsoft.com
You will also find an excellent
walk-through ribbon guide on her own personal site
EchosVoice.com, complete with screen menu captures so you follow
her instructions visually if needed.
In an recent
video interview for Microsoft she makes the point that,
"I like to put features in Office where I want them to be,
not necessarily where Microsoft wants them to be!"
This is exactly the type of real user feedback that the Office
2010 beta release was designed to generate.
Having worked so well for Windows 7, this approach of releasing
beta products early for experts and enthusiasts alike, means
that the final product is likely to meet customer needs and
expectations.

Save Time
Many parents and older Office users will be glad to hear that
Echo describes customising the ribbon as, "a piece of cake".
The video interview illustrates the menus being used but to
begin is as simple as Right Click > Choose 'Customise
The Ribbon'.
Personally, the ability to customise the ribbon bar and have it
exactly the way I want it is a BIG incentive to upgrade.
This is a genuine benefit and real time-saver,
highlighting the importance of usability features over gimmicks
to persuade users to buy the latest edition.
The whole .doc vs .docx file format issue was an own goal that
could easily have been avoided.
At a time when cheap hard-drives were expanding beyond 500GB,
who cares about saving a few kilobytes by making word docs
slightly smaller?
It's not like most people are still using dial-up to send email
attachments!
What appears simple, straight forward and obvious to people who
work within the software industry, does not always appear
likewise to the average person.
Office 2010 continues the Windows 7 trend of Microsoft listening
to its customers and delivering a new experience worthy of
purchase.

you can finally have your cake and eat it.
