No Satellite Dish? Watch Sky TV Online With Windows 7

Satellite TV without the satellite.

by SoftwareGuru

If you live in the UK it is now possible to watch satellite TV online - legally! - whether you are an existing Sky customer or not.

Although the BBC iPlayer grabbed the headlines, Sky's own online streaming service (Sky Player) has been evolving for some time now.

Built using the free video streaming plugin Microsoft Silverlight, Sky Player is now available in UK via,

- Video Marketplace for all Xbox 360 consoles
- Windows Media Center on Windows 7
- Sky.com and Internet Explorer using XP SP3 / Vista / Win7

Sky.com also states that, "Intel-based Macs, Firefox, and Safari" are all supported too. Personally I have only tested Windows PCs so feel free to send your experiences & feedback to @studentsoftware on Twitter.

The marketing hype may be highlighting how you can watch Sky TV through your Xbox 360 or Windows 7 operating system but rest assured that it works just as well through a Windows XP/Vista PC.

Although launched initially as a standalone media player like iTunes, Sky Player has since added the option of streaming through your web browser (albeit via a pop-up window).

I watched the satire-heavy John Cusack movie "War, Inc" from the Sky Movies database on a Vista laptop last night so not only can I confirm that it works, I can confirm that the service is brilliant.

Watching Online TV Legally

Not a Sky TV customer?
Don't like the idea of 12 month contracts? Prefer to watch programmes on-demand? This is the ideal solution.

Using your Microsoft Windows PC or laptop you can watch Sky TV programmes without a dish, Sky box or long term contract.

With a monthly subscription you can watch selected channels live, plus there's a great choice of catch-up programmes to watch on demand.

Minimum contract is just one month. You can also rent or buy additional content with no commitment.

Existing Sky Customers

If you're a Sky digital satellite customer you can watch programmes from channels in your TV package for free.

For example, if you're a Sky1 subscriber, Sky1’s top shows are available to watch online for free for 30 days after they first aired.

No longer are you tied to your living room Sky box. If you have the top TV package plus Sky Player installed on your new Windows 7 laptop then you can watch live sport, movies and more - from anywhere!
Windows PC, Laptop or Xbox 360

UK gamers will find that it is incredibly easy to set up Sky Player on their Xbox 360 console.

Microsoft have added even more functionality to Xbox 360 through Zune HD Video Player (4mb broadband connection required for 1080p on-demand movie streaming), Facebook and Twitter applications.

Students who love the game Halo can also install new community app 'Halo Waypoint' to the Xbox 360 dashboard as a way of tracking accomplishments throughout the various Halo games.

Even critics of Windows Media Center must concede that the inclusion of Sky Player in Windows 7 makes it an extremely attractive prospect.

Forthcoming Freeview-HD channels which can be watched and recorded through Windows Media Center makes Windows 7 even more attractive.

Finally, in case you still need convincing that Windows 7 is the best thing since sliced bread, take a look at this video on our YouTube profile regarding Parental Controls.

It shows parents the Parental Controls option within Windows 7 that allows you to choose specific time periods when you want the family PC to be able to connect to the internet.

Parental Controls helps you limit how much computer time children have, as well as which programs and games they can use and perhaps more importantly, when.

Both the Xbox 360 and Windows PCs give parents the tools to block access to objectionable TV shows, movies and video games.

As the variety of entertainment options increases, Microsoft and Software4Students would like to reassure parents that you can still very much stay in control!
