Why would my learners want to purchase Windows XP when it probably came with their computer in the first place?

We provide Windows XP Professional Upgrade and Vista Business Upgrade. This means that students could buy an upgrade (for example from Home Basic to Windows Vista Business) for much less than from a high street store.

Also the majority of PCs and laptops sold to consumers come configured with XP Home or Windows Vista Home Basic. One of the limitations of this is that they cannot connect to a network. This is quite important for colleges, and certain schools. We have seen some schools bringing in laptop initiatives for pupils, and this will give them the ability to purchase a low cost upgrade option. The option to Upgrade to the professional versions also provides the user with a faster, more secure, operating system.

I've found a Student and Teacher version of Office on eBay, what's the difference?

We provide professional versions of Office. The Student and Teacher version that you would have seen online or in shops is the limited Home and Student version. This does not include Outlook, Access, or Publisher - these are only available on the Professional Versions, which are available through Software4Students. This may be less important to primary schools, but secondary schools require Access to deliver the ICT curriculum, thus some schools may prefer students to be able to use this at home. If a student wants to buy Access separately, it will typically cost £120-£150 elsewhere.

How much will the rebate really make us?

The focus of the programme is to bring easy access to low cost top of the range software to students and pupils, without administrative overheads for the school. This is the primary benefit of the programme.

There are many other benefits to the programme. The programme helps students and parents cross the digital divide; it presents an easy, no administration, hassle free, fully compliant solution for schools and colleges while providing access to the software at the lowest possible price point.

The rebate can be significant for colleges and secondary schools. Primary schools may also benefit greatly from letting pupils know that they can save money on software.

What are the real benefits of the programme to learners and schools?

The Software4Students programme is more than just supporting ICT in schools, saving pupils money, making more software available for students, or making the same school license deals available to pupils. It's a mix of all of these things, and every time a single pupil buys software through the scheme:

  • the school gets a small rebate
  • the parent/pupil/student saves money
  • the pupil gets more software than if they had bought a similar pack in store
  • pupils are encouraged to use ICT a little bit more for their learning.
