Solve Mystery Of What's Slowing Down Outlook 2010
New
diagnosis needed for your condition.
by
SoftwareGuru
Every week the TV show
House
takes on a new medical mystery and the patient's first diagnosis
is usually wrong.
The same could be said of our own initial views on Outlook 2010.
If there's one criticism I have of Microsoft software it's that
they make it too easy for other programs to install add-ins and
extensions without asking you first.
Outlook 2010 is the latest time-saving Microsoft program to
suffer at the hands of
external forces.
I know from our
Twitter feedback that even experienced Microsoft Office
users such as
@jonwinterburn were having issues with Outlook 2010.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to that discussion and
brought it to our attention!
Today I'm going to help you solve those Outlook problems and get
your speed and stability back.
Before we go any further, please make sure you install the
latest free Office software updates via Windows Button (formerly
Start button) > Control Panel > Windows Update.
Office updates fix a variety of issues so it's important to rule
them out first. This is the 'go run the lab test' part
of the episode!

How To Turn Off Unwanted Guests
Usually, this type of blog post would be reserved for Windows
operating systems.
For example, a clean install of Windows on a quality hard-drive
will always work fine.
It's when you add your own personal mix of software programs to
the equation that Windows can slow down and
sometimes run into difficulty, especially on less powerful
computers and laptops.
Low spec laptops (1GB ram, cheap low powered processor)
are the worst culprits.
In Windows, you can use the admin options via Control Panel to
turn off background services and also
msconfig to prevent unnecessary programs running at startup.
If that looks too confusing for you, ask a
more tech-minded
friend or family member to do it for you.
You'll be amazed at how
many programs and auto-updaters run at start-up even though
there is absolutely no need for them to do so.
A similar
situation applies to Microsoft Outlook 2010.
A
multitude of programs can install add-ins with Outlook
without you knowing or even needing them.
Hold CTRL button, click your Outlook
desktop
icon, launch Safe Mode.
Then click
File > Options > Add-ins.
Edit as required and
restart Outlook.
|
Edit As Required
By this I mean look at the list of add-ins and choose one of two
options:
1. Disable all add-ins and then relaunch Outlook. If it works
fine you can begin the process of turning the first add-in back
on, testing how Outlook responds after restart, and repeat this
process for all add-ins.
2. If you're in a hurry, turn off the most recently installed
add-ins. Most likely it'll be from an Anti-Virus program or
iTunes.
Since everyone will have different software installed on their
computer, each add-in list will vary.
Therefore, it's simply a case of edit the add-in list based on
your own Outlook requirements.
Either approach should improve the speed and stability of your
Outlook 2010 program.
Having edited my own add-in list this week I have found that the
improvements are significant and well worth the time spent
achieving them.
The Hotmail connector is still the only aspect which isn't
lightning
fast but I'm sure Microsoft are aware of this.
Improvements to Hotmail are being made all the time and Outlook
will continue to benefit from Windows Updates over the next 12
months.
With the mystery solved, your program should be in good health and
you'll know what to do if this happens again with Outlook in the
future.
Until the next software case comes along anyway!
Outlook 2010 is part of our incredible offer on
Microsoft Office 2010 - buy it online now for only £38.95 on
DVD or download.
