Speaking Words of Wisdom
The Generation Game
by

Thursday 7th May 2009
The internet has changed the way people
learn and consume knowledge.
Historically, parents and elders passed down their ideas and
experience for our benefit.
As a result of technology, parents are discovering that their
children are even less interested in the knowledge they have to
offer.
Instead parents should offer their wisdom.
It is important to grasp the fundamental difference between the
two, especially in a world where Google or LiveSearch is capable
of offering 50 million search results on a topic.
Many older parents are likely to feel completely lost in the
face of new technology, in an era where computers are now part
of the
core curriculum.
In spite of this, students at school and college would do well
to start listening because in this stormy economic
climate the value of wisdom just went up tenfold.
No matter how clever technology makes us feel, students will
still face time-honoured obstacles such as navigating a career
path, dealing with people including your boss and other real
life issues that no amount of education can prepare you for
adequately.

Words of Wisdom
Whether you're a Mac, PC, or anything else for that matter there
are certain individuals that when they talk people listen. Bill
Gates is one of those people.
The Microsoft founder once told a high school the lessons he did
not learn in school. They included the following:
RULE 1 Life is not fair; get used to it.
RULE 2 The world won't care about your self-esteem. The
world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel
good about yourself.
RULE 2 You will NOT make $40,000 a year right out of school.
RULE 4 If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get
a boss.
RULE 5 Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your
grandparents had a different word for burger flipping; they
called it opportunity.
RULE 6 If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so
don't whine about your mistakes - learn from them.
RULE 7 Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring
as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills,
cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool
you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites
of your parents' generation, try 'delousing' the closet in your
own room.
RULE 8 Your school may have done away with winners and
losers, but life has not. In some schools, they have abolished
failing grades; they'll give you as many chances as you want to
get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest
resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
RULE 9 Life is not divided into terms. You don't get summers
off and very few employers are interested in helping you find
yourself. Do that on your own time.
RULE 10 Television is NOT real life. In real life, people
actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
RULE 11 Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working
for one.

Before You Were Born...
The employment challenges that face the
graduation classes of 2009 are substantial.
In a society where we expect everything in an instant and
patience has almost become a forgotten concept, some graduates
are on a collision course with the biggest reality check of
their young lives.
Looking ahead to the future, it's important
for parents to help their children understand that setbacks are
just that, and not an end of the world scenario.
As the saying goes, 'the harder I work, the luckier I get'.
Students graduating this year will need to make their own luck
and with computer and IT knowledge finally considered as
important as reading, writing and maths, boosting your skill set
should be a priority.
With affordable software prices from Software4Students,
we are enabling students of all ages and their families to
create their own luck.
Go get 'em!
