Student life, love and social media

Talking About My Generation

by SoftwareGuru

Before the turn of the century, being a tech-savy student wasn't so difficult.

Student life at college or university didn't involve online social media, mobile phones were only beginning to become common and we still emailed our friends on a regular basis from our yahoo or Hotmail accounts.

In 2010 if a student romance turns sour, there's a potential online minefield to negotiate.

OK, Software4Students is a site about software and not dating tips but given how social media has become part of the fabric of everyday student life online, it's fair to say that it's a valid topic.

I mean, we can't force you to buy the likes of OneNote or Dragon Naturally Speaking software. All we can do is point out how much easier these things can make your life.

So when I came across a recent CNN article written by the minds behind Stuff Hipsters Hate I figured I'd share it with our readers.

On the same day I see Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg reassuring the masses about privacy via The Oprah Show on TV, the reality of sharing too much online is summed up here: "How To Handle A Breakup Online".

A few home truths never hurt anyone and it will definitely give you some food for thought.

New Messenger Beta Privacy

We've all heard and seen the messages online about never giving out passwords or sensitive information to others online.

So where does using your real name online fit into this security issue?

The new Messenger beta (which we talked about in this month's S4S newsletter) forces users to use the name they signed up with on their original Windows/Hotmail/MSN profile.

While the beta shows a huge amount of promise along with high definition video calls, what's with the beta's lack of display names?

If Microsoft are serious about competing with Facebook chat then it's just as well that this is only a beta and users can submit feedback.

Since I installed Windows 7 Pro on my laptop I've been using the messenger web interface via Hotmail, instead of installing the standalone program.

Overall it works reasonably well although it has a tendency to sign me out every now and then at random which is quite strange.

I usually sign back in but I'm not sure if impatient teens and students will be as forgiving.
Software and Social Media

The line between offline software and online social media is beginning to slowly blur with the arrival of collaborative tools such as Microsoft Office web apps.

Anyone who uses their free officelive.com or docs.com account can create, edit and share documents online with friends or work colleagues.

Learning how to manage our online profiles in terms of personal and group privacy as well as productivity is just as important as discovering what's new in Word 2010 or Photoshop CS5.

Let's not underestimate the shift in how we work and communicate with others. These changes are huge and it will take time for everyone to get used to it.

Society may be growing more impatient but it is important we allow ourselves the time and opportunity to grow into this new way of sharing our lives with others.

This isn't the Matrix. We can't simply plug a wire into the back of our heads and upload knowledge instantly. Well, not yet anyway.

Until then, we must learn to be more patient and consider carefully how much of ourselves we should share with others.
