Students: Become A Study-Note-Taking Zombie Killer!

More Engaging Ways To Study

by SoftwareGuru

This week Microsoft revealed a new Windows 7 ad which featured a spoof zombie blog.

What has that got to do with taking notes you may ask?

Well students, as Woody Harrelson said in recent movie Zombieland, "it's time to nut up or shut up."

Whether you're studying science (what creates zombies in the first place?), the arts (was Hamlet's father a ghost or a zombie?) or some other academic subject which we trust contributes to the killing of zombies, you now have two new tools at your disposal.

- Microsoft OneNote 2010
- Dragon Naturally Speaking

Both of these software programs will enable you to create the most useful study notes possible.

Before we take a look at the benefits of these new applications, it's worth reminding ourselves that being well prepared is the best way to deal with difficult situations - from passing exams to mowing down zombies on Xbox!

Strong foundations will form the base upon which success will be built.

Still need convincing? Let's get started then.

Create Your Own Personal Learning Space

From the classroom to the lecture hall, handwritten notes are the starting point for all student revision.

It can be tricky trying to organise pages and pages of handwritten notes and if they become muddled up it can be a nightmare trying to sort them all out.

Our use of email and the web as a learning tool complicates learning habits even further.

What was that online video we watched that was so informative? Where was that article we came across last week but forgot to bookmark?

That's no way to prepare for a zombie attack!

By using Microsoft OneNote 2010, not only can we transfer handwritten notes into digital format and edit them, we can pull different types of online information together and file them accordingly.

Just as we use Facebook to create our own personal online social space, we can use OneNote to create our own learning space - and tailor it exactly how we want it.

OneNote 2010 is a highly valuable part of the Microsoft Office 2010 toolkit and is arguably worth the price of the overall package by itself.

If you have a personal social space like Facebook but have yet to create your own learning space, isn't it time you did?
More Engaging Note Creation

The sheer volume of notes that students are confronted with during revision time can make studying as much fun as trying to kill a zombie with a toothbrush.

Writing out notes can be extremely tedious and uninspiring. As we write, our minds can wander and this makes remembering knowledge later more difficult.

This is why dictation software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking can be of tremendous benefit to students.

Being fully engaged in the note creation process is much more beneficial.

There are many benefits for students who dictate notes.

Large volumes of revision notes can be created quickly simply by reading from textbooks.

Existing notes can be read aloud to create new revision notes specific to possible exam questions.

Students can test their knowledge by dictating all that they know on a subject, then comparing the notes created by the software with textbooks, identifying gaps in their knowledge.

The fact that students are speaking and creating notes at the same time means they are fully engaged in the academic subject and actively thinking about it.

This may help students recall information later because they may remember actually saying the information out loud.

A simple yet powerfully effective study tool.
