Price Difference Debate: Windows 7 Professional Upgrade

From XP Pro to Win 7 Pro.

by SoftwareGuru

One of the most popular software purchases in recent years has been Windows XP Professional.

As a result of this, a lot of debate has taken place online since the launch of Windows 7 as to whether the Ultimate edition is worth the extra money when it's key advantage is the BitLocker encryption feature.

It also features the ability to switch at any time between 35 different languages.

While some users will choose Ultimate simply because it is marketed as the top of the range product, many budget conscious home users are voicing their preference for Windows 7 Professional upgrade.

Now that it has been added to the Software4Students catalogue, let's take a look at what Windows 7 Professional upgrade has to offer.

Value For Money

The home user argument is simple: file encryption at home is security overkill and only one language will ever be used on the computer. So why pay more?

As with Vista Ultimate, no-one ever knows what free extras Microsoft will supply to Ultimate owners so it is impossible to calculate their value.

Some critics would argue that if Vista Ultimate's track record is anything to go by, the Ultimate version should have been removed and its existence only serves to confuse prospective customers.

There is also the school of thought that the popularity of non-Microsoft software means that many users are only interested in the core functionality of the Windows operating system itself, such as creating home Wi-Fi networks easily or accessing the PC remotely when away from home.

Is it possible that as nice as it is to have software such as Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, and Internet Explorer 8, none of them are OS sellers?

Windows 7 has been created while the real prospect of a bloatware-free online Google OS looms on the horizon.

Not far behind it comes Firefox, OpenOffice and iTunes which would certainly provide PC users with an alternative desktop that would really test not only users' OS preference but also their real software preferences.

When that day comes, will it be the moment of truth for Microsoft in terms of what software users really want installed on their PC?

Thankfully, both Internet Explorer 8 and Windows 7 have delivered the goods. If the next incarnation of Office can repeat this success, Microsoft's future should be assured.

Customer Trust At Online Checkout.

The future of Windows OS must therefore rest on key issues such as ease-of-use, reliability and price.

In relation to Windows 7 Professional for home users, Microsoft UK have certainly delivered on all of these vital areas.

As an online writer for Software4Students, I have become accustomed to the extraordinarily low prices on offer for students and family members. I honestly thought that nothing price-wise from S4S could still surprise me.

Then Windows 7 Professional appeared this week as a pre-order for £35 and I was honestly shocked. That is so cheap it's almost unbelievable. I know big software companies are keen to tackle piracy but that really is a big carrot to home users to buy genuine software.

It's fantastic and I wholeheartedly give it the thumbs up.

Even if you want to split hairs and say it's actually £36.95 due to the £1.95 Credit/Debit Card transaction charge, that charge is still a drop in the ocean compared to the RRP of £219.99 for the normal retail package.

On a related note, try booking a "cheap flight" online with anyone to see real transaction charge abuse.

As reported by MoneySavingExpert.com: Ryanair lists its debit card charge as £5 per person each way, that's £10 in card charges alone on a return flight!

Make no mistake, checkout customer abuse is on the rise when it comes to shopping online.

At Software4Students, maintaining high standards is of the utmost importance.

You can't please all of the people all of the time but if you can buy Windows 7 Professional for only £35, it's hard to find fault with that!
