Who Would Want To Be 18 Today?

Uncertainty? Bring It On.

by SoftwareGuru

"Who would want to be 18 today?" asks the national newspaper headline. It's a good question.

The media this week is all about students:

- Record number of school-leavers expected to miss out on university.

- Those who do secure place forecast to incur debts of £24,700 in their student years.

- Class of 2010 likely to be confronted by uncertain job market when they graduate.

Not exactly life-affirming or hope filled ideas on offer from the media then.

However, school leavers should be aware that You can save a lot of money by taking a degree at The Open University.

Arguably, the cost of learning in the Internet era is only as expensive as you choose to make it.

Don't get me wrong, the social and personal growth aspect of leaving home and studying a new course in a new place can be incredibly rewarding.

The point is to balance that experience option with financial reality.

Is It Really What You Want?

The Open University understands the choices that students must make against the backdrop of the recession.

"It's about students making positive decisions to come and study with us because of their personal circumstances - they may be concerned about accumulating debt; they may have a job they want to hang on to."

It's also worth pointing out that at 18 it's OK if you don't know what you want to do with your life.

There's definitely a case to be made for trying out your intended course first via Open University and holding down a part-time job.

This could help you avoid the common and expensive mistake of realising after your first year that the course or university isn't right for you.

Any University is going to look favourably upon a prospective student who has put the effort in to make sure that this is the area that they are determined to succeed in.

The last thing they want is students dropping out after a year because it was the wrong choice.

Either way students need to keep an open mind.

Everyone is different and no matter what your friends are doing you should follow your own instincts.

Learning should be a lifelong ambition and not simply an obligation forced upon us by society so that we can fulfill the expectations of others.
Answering The BIG question

At Software4Students our aim is to enable school children, students and their families to get more for less.

Whether you're at school, college or even an Open University student you can take advantage of our special offers.

Software skills can form an important part of your CV or résumé.

You've probably used Word but how skillful are you with Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Access?

How about Adobe CS5 Photoshop or Dreamweaver?

Considering the time people spend every day on social media sites like Facebook, it's fair to say we could afford to spend 15 minutes every day learning something new if we really wanted to do so.

So despite all of the current media headlines, the future is, as always, very much in our own hands.

Which reminds me of the days when I myself was leaving school and Oasis were the biggest band in the UK and Ireland.

As the line goes: you can have it all but how much do you want it?

That's the question we have to ask ourselves.
