Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) now available

To install or not to install?

by SoftwareGuru

Software4Students customers can now download of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). This is yet another reminder of why buying genuine software at low prices is the right thing to do!

However, many of our customers are asking us “is installing Windows 7 SP1 the right thing to do?”, so we decided to take a look at the features and see what the experts are saying.

What’s included in Windows 7 SP1?

According to Microsoft, “Windows 7 includes new improvements to features and services in Windows 7, such as improved reliability when connecting to HDMI audio devices, printing using the XPS Viewer, and restoring previous folders in Windows Explorer after restarting.”

In short:

• If you need to print XPS documents that contain a mixture of pages in the landscape and portrait formats, you might have had problems getting them to print correctly before. The service pack fixes this problem. • There's also a fix for problems that people had with HDMI audio devices after a reboot.
• If you check the "restore previous folders at logon" option in Explorer's folder options, you might have noticed that the folders show up in a cascaded group when they're restored. If you want them to come back positioned as they were before, the service pack fixes that.
Do you need these updates?

Many of these only affect a limited number of users. SP1 also includes security updates all of which have been released individually for Windows 7 users anyway - just make sure you have your updates turned on! Several tech blogs have offered their opinions on whether or not to install Windows 7 SP1.

Michael Horowitz of Defensive Computing is saying to hold off until at least June before you install SP1. He said, “This is not a knock on Microsoft, Windows or the service pack itself. Let the curious, the un-informed and the pioneers suffer the inevitable problems with any major release of software.”

Waiting will allow any incompatibilities to be fixed before installing and as it stands the improvements in SP1 are irrelevant to most users.

In the Win7News newsletter, Deb Shinder said as a whole SP1 is “not terribly exciting.

Steve Gibson, on his href="http://www.grc.com/sn/sn-290.htm">Security Now podcast, said, "There’s no hurry about installing it".

There is no doubt that Windows 7 SP1 will be beneficial in the long-term. In the short-term, it's hard to see any massive advantages.
